Protector, pad, cover. The words get used, more or less, interchangeably, and that's fine. What actually matters when choosing one isn't the name of the label.
It's what do you want it to do?
Because our mattress covers do two different jobs. Some add a soft, breathable layer that makes the bed more comfortable and keeps your sleep surface fresh. Others are a true waterproof barrier. Knowing which you're after makes the rest simple.
So let's start there.
What do you want it to do?
Most people choosing a cover want one of two things.
Either you want the bed to feel softer and breathe better, with a layer that absorbs the everyday moisture of sleep. Or you want a real barrier against spills, accidents, and the occasional knocked-over cup of tea.
Those are different jobs, and they point to different covers. Once you know which you're after, the choice makes itself.
The Comfort Layer
This is a soft, quilted layer of organic cotton that fits over your mattress beneath your sheet. It adds a gentle cushion, helps the mattress breathe, and absorbs the everyday moisture of sleep: body warmth, a little perspiration, the natural humidity of a room. It protects the surface of your mattress while making the bed itself feel softer to lie on.
It is absorbent, not waterproof. More on that distinction in a moment, because it matters.
If you tend to sleep warm, this is often the layer you'll appreciate most. Cotton lets heat move through it rather than trapping it the way synthetic toppers can.
Two versions, depending on how much substance you'd like:
The Organic Cotton Quilted Mattress Pad Protector
our everyday layer. A gentle quilted cushion that softens the bed and keeps the surface fresh.

with a deeper fill for anyone who prefers a more padded, substantial feel underfoot.
Shop the Luxury PadSame idea, two weights. The choice is simply how plush you'd like the bed to feel.
The Waterproof Barrier
This is the layer people are usually picturing when they say the word waterproof, and it's worth being precise about.
If you need genuine protection against liquid, a spill, a child's accident, a pet on the bed, anything that could reach the mattress, you want one of our waterproof covers. These have a true protective layer bonded to organic cotton, so they keep liquid out while still feeling soft and breathing far better than the vinyl and plastic-backed covers most people have tried and quietly disliked.
Both keep liquid out where it counts. What sets them apart is how far that protection reaches, and how each one feels:
The Organic Waterproof Pique Knit Mattress Cover
with a crisp, lightly textured cotton surface. The sleeping surface is fully waterproof, while the skirt is left breathable on purpose, for more airflow and a lighter feel on the bed. The choice if you want protection where you actually sleep, without anything extra.

The Organic Waterproof Jersey Knit Mattress Cover
with a softer, stretchier, slightly warmer feel. Fully waterproof on all five sides, skirt included, for edge-to-edge coverage. The choice for cribs, kids, and pets, or anyone who simply wants the whole mattress protected.

A note on the word "waterproof"
This is the one worth slowing down for, because it's where most of the confusion lives.
Our quilted pads are absorbent. They soak up everyday moisture and keep your sleep surface fresh, the way a good cotton layer should. They are not designed to stop a glass of water from reaching the mattress.
If a true liquid barrier is what you're after, choose one of the waterproof covers above, full-surface or full-coverage depending on how much you want protected. If you simply want a softer, cleaner, more breathable surface to sleep on, a quilted pad is the right call.
Two jobs, two layers. Once you know which you're solving for, the choice tends to make itself.
A quick way to decide
One thing on fit
All four are made to fit standard through deep mattresses. If yours sits on the shallower side, around eleven inches or less, the corners may feel a little loose. It's worth measuring the height of your mattress before you choose, so the fit feels considered rather than approximate.
And for your pillows
The same thinking applies one layer up.
Our Organic Cotton Quilted Pillow Protectors do for your pillows what a quilted pad does for your mattress: a soft, breathable layer that absorbs everyday moisture and keeps things fresh, in the same organic cotton you're already sleeping on.
Building your bed
However you choose to layer it, the principle stays the same. Natural materials, each doing one job well, brought together with a little intention.
